WWE Backlash 2017

It’s Smackdown Live’s first pay per view since Wrestlemania and its live from the Allstate Arena in Chicago. It’s Backlash.

Shinsuke Nakamura vs Dolph Ziggler

We kick things off with the highly anticipated debut of Shinsuke Nakamura as he goes one on one with Dolph Ziggler. A superb technical exchange leads to Nakamura getting the upper hand on his opponent. Ziggler shoves Shinsuke in the face and Nakamura fights back with some big hits but Dolph regains control. A near fall for Dolph leads to Nakamura mounting a come back as he begins to show him what strong style is all about. Ziggler fights back as he plays possum to take advantage with Nakamura in the ropes. Ziggler gets another near fall. Shinsuke fights back as he starts to unload. Dolph rolls up Nakamura but only gets a near fall. Nakamura locks in a triangle choke on the floor but Ziggler quickly forces a rope break. A massive DDT from Dolph only gets a near fall once again. Ziggler ducks out of the way of the Kinshasa to roll up his opponent for a 2 count, he follows up with the Fame Asser but only manages a near fall. A brilliant exchange ends with Ziggler hitting the Zig-Zag but once again it’s only a near fall as Shinsuke powers out. Nakamura fights back again but Ziggler counters the reverse exploder suplex with a super kick to the back of Nakamura’s neck but with both men weak Ziggler takes his time with the pin and only manages a near fall. Dolph spits in Shinsuke’s face and he loses it he lashes out at Ziggler and beats him down. Nakamura connects with the reverse exploder and follows up with the Kinshasa. Shinsuke Nakamura wins via Pinfall.

Smackdown Tag Team Championship Match: The Usos vs Breezango

Its Tag Title time now at Backlash. Jimmy and Fandango start the match. Fandango gets the better of the early exchange and he tags is Tyler Breeze. He mocks The Usos with the janitor’s outfit and he uses the mop to his advantage before Jimmy cleans him out and takes control. Jimmy and Jey take over in the match as they begin to wear down Fandango. Fandango fights back with a near fall and then brings in Tyler Breeze who’s now dressed as a grandma. Breeze again has another little flurry of offence before Jimmy regains control. Breeze makes the tag and Fandango again turns the momentum in his teams favour but only gets a near fall. A massive DDT leads to another near fall. With Breeze the legal man, a blind tag by The Usos leads to a double team manoeuvre and a near fall. Breeze fights back with an Unprettier and gets a near fall. The Usos launch Breeze into the crowd and then make the numbers game count as a super kick leads to a pin. The Usos win via Pinfall.

Baron Corbin vs Sami Zayn

Corbin shows his power early, but Zayn fights back and sends The Lone Wolf out to regroup. Corbin again takes over but he’s sent to the outside a second time by Zayn. He takes Corbin down on the outside but he appears hurt clutching his lower back. Sami tries to wear down his opponent in the corner but he gets rushed into the opposite corner as Corbin begins to beat him down. Corbin locks Zayn into a bear hug submission as he continues to wear him down. Zayn fights out and begins to fight back. Corbin quells the momentum as he picks up a near fall off a spinebuster. Zayn again begins to fight back and he picks up a near fall for his efforts. Corbin once again takes control in this back and forth contest but somehow Zayn still manages to kick out after all the punishment. Zayn fights back on the top rope and counters Corbin’s attack with a sunset flip powerbomb but only manages a near fall. Zayn gets a crucifix pin out of nowhwere but Corbin kicks out and hits the Deep Six but Zayn kicks out again. Corbin loses it and just beats down Zayn until the referee pulls him away. Zayn has a flurry of offence that ends with him hitting the Helluva Kick. Sami Zayn wins via Pinfall.

The Maharaja, Jinder Mahal arrives for his WWE Title match with the Singh Brothers in his limo. He says that Chicago and America are full of haters because the people hate him. He says that tonight he’ll become the new WWE Champion.

Naomi/Charlotte/Becky Lynch vs The Welcoming Committee

Tamina and Becky start the match. Tamina overpowers her early on but Becky uses her speed to try fight back to no avail. Natalya gets then tag but Lynch takes control and brings in Charlotte. Nattie gets the better of Charlotte but Flair gets the near fall. A distraction by Carmella allows Nattie to take control and she immediately brings Tamina back in. Quick tags wearing down The Queen ends with Carmella being the legal woman for her team. Carmella gets a near fall. Charlotte gets the tag to Naomi. Naomi comes in on fire and the momentum shifts immediately but a distraction from Tamina helps restore control for the Welcoming Committee. Tamina is tagged in and she continues to beat down the champion. Naomi tries to fight back and make the tag but Tamina hits the Samoan Drop only for Charlotte to break up the pin. Nattie comes in but Naomi finally tags out to Becky Lynch who comes in on an absolute roll. She takes out all of the opposing team and gets a near fall. The Disarmer is broken up by Carmella and a brawl ensues. Nattie takes advantage of Tamina’s distraction to lock in the Sharpshooter. The Welcoming Committee win via Submission.

United States Championship Match: Kevin Owens vs AJ Styles

Owens immediately shoots for AJ’s injured leg but Styles rolls away. AJ controls the match early as he fights off the champion. Owens cleverly rolls out to put a halt to Styles’ momentum. Owens tries to fight back but a wicked dropkick from AJ stops him dead. The two men battle back and forth until Owens gets a near fall as he starts to beat down his opponent. Owens hits a series of sentons but only manages to get a near fall. A blitz of offence swings the momentum back in AJ’s favour as he picks up a near fall. An amazing back and forth exchange results in near falls for both men. Champion and challenger battle back and forth until Owens counters the Styles Clash off the apron and goes to work on the injured leg of Styles. A single leg crab submission transitioned into an ankle lock somehow ends with AJ forcing the rope break. AJ keeps himself alive in the match a powerbomb from the top rope. He tries for the Phenomenal Forearm but he can’t do it as he slips off the ropes and Owens picks up a near fall as a result. Styles tries to fight back but Owens hits him with a wicked suplex to get a near fall. AJ pulls off a suplex onto the apron to wound Owens. Owens sends AJ into the time keepers area but he comes back with a Phenomenal Forearm off the barricade. Styles tries for the Styles Clash on the table but he falls through the gap and ends up tangled in the table. Kevin Owens wins via Count Out.

After the match, KO attacks from behind before leaving with the US Title in his clutches.

Luke Harper vs Erick Rowan

Rowan and Harper go back and forth early on with Rowan getting early control of the match beating down his opponent. Rowan picks up a near fall. The two men go back and forth until Harper gains control with these two giants throwing everything at each other. Harper’s momentum leads to a near fall. Rowan fights back to get a near fall. Harper begins to fight back and hits a Discus Clothesline. Luke Harper wins via Pinfall.

WWE Championship Match: Randy Orton vs Jinder Mahal

Orton jumps Mahal early during the introductions. He beats down the challenger on the outside before getting him back in the ring. The match officially starts and Orton resumes the assault. Jinder escapes the RKO but that doesn’t stop the champion stalking him and attacking on the outside. Jinder begins to take control of the match as he works on Orton’s shoulder. The champion mounts a comeback as he begins to wear Mahal down. Mahal fights back to get a near fall over the champion. Orton regains control on the outside as he slams Jinder down onto the announcers table. Back inside the ring, Jinder regains control as he continues to attack Orton’s shoulder. A missed shoulder charge and a top rope suplex put the momentum back in favour of the champion. Orton follows up by gaining a near fall. The two superstars go back and forth until Orton hits his signature Hangman’s DDT. Mahal rolls out of the ring out of the way of the RKO. Orton rolls out after him and takes out the Singh Brothers. Mahal attacks Randy from behind but falls victim to an RKO outta nowhere only to be pulled out of the ring by the Singh Brothers. Orton goes to the outside again and takes apart the Singh Brothers. Mahal attacks from behind with Kalas. Jinder Mahal wins via Pinfall. Jinder Mahal is the new WWE Champion.

Not the greatest PPV in truth, nothing too memorable happened except from the main event. The finish to AJ vs Owens was absolutely shocking, but we do have a new WWE Champion and I really can’t wait for Smackdown Live on Tuesday.
