The Viper Strikes

We take a look back at last Tuesday’s Smackdown episode

Shane McMahon and Daniel Bryan open the show. They discuss the controversy surrounding the Main Event at Wrestlemania. They explain that they disagree on the matter and announce AJ Styles vs Randy Orton for the nights Main Event.

AJ confronts the two men backstage telling them he will take out Randy Orton.

James Ellsworth/Carmela vs John Cena/Nikki Bella

Carmela and Nikki begin the match as Miz & Maryse make their way out. Carmela uses the distraction to Superkick Bella and she starts to take control. Nikki throws Carmela outside and makes the tag to Cena. Ellsworth tries to run. The women get involved. Nikki and John nail their opponents with 5 Knuckle Shuffles in stereo and follow them up with the AA and the Fearless Lock respectively. John Cena & Nikki Bella win via Submission.

After the match, Miz and Maryse ambush the victors leaving them laid out. Maryse responds to Nikki’s threat with “Hey Nikki! Break that B*tch!”

Randy Orton is interviewed and claims no one will stop him from facing Bray Wyatt at Wrestlemania.

Ravishing Rick Rude is inducted into the 2017 Hall Of Fame.

Kurt Hawkins calls out Dean Ambrose. Ambrose comes out and drops him on the outside. Dean calls out Baron Corbin once again to no avail. Corbin says he will take everything away from Ambrose when the time is right and he is ready. Dean says if Baron won’t come to him then he will just have to go and find him.

Mojo Rawley announces that he will be entering the Andre The Giant Memorial Battle Royale.

Ambrose finds Corbin backstage who blindsides him with a lead pipe and viciously beats him down. Corbin wasn’t finished as he trapped Dean’s body underneath a forklift.

 Alexa’s Blissertation

Alexa talks about who she will face coming up at Wrestlemania, this brings out Becky Lynch and Natalya who both believe they should be Alexa’s opponent. Mickie James pipes up and says that she should be the number one contender. All this commotion brings out GM Daniel Bryan who announces that at Wrestlemania, Alexa will defend her Women’s Title against every available woman on the Smackdown roster. Daniel also makes a match straight away, a tag match pitting Becky & Natalya against Alexa & Mickie.

Becky Lynch/Natalya vs Alexa Bliss/Mickie James

Nattie and Alexa start the match and the two go back and forth with no one really taking control. Nattie makes the tag to Becky and Alexa tags in James. The two women lock up and go back and forth in  a smooth technical exchange. Mickie brings in Alexa and they start to wear down Becky. Alexa can only manage a near fall. Becky fights back and starts to take control as she picks up a near fall. Thanks to some outside interference from Mickie, her team regains control. Alexa comes in and continues to wear Becky down. Becky backs Mickie into a corner but she’s attacked from behind by her supposed partner Natalya who then walks out on her. Alexa Bliss & Mickie James win via Pinfall.

As they celebrate, Mickie nails Alexa with the Mick Kick.

AJ Styles vs Randy Orton

Randy attempts an early RKO and this sends AJ scurrying to the outside. AJ takes control, grounding Orton and keeping control as he keeps hold of the side head lock. The two men go back and forth and Orton begins to takeover. Orton drops AJ back first onto the barricade before taking the action back inside the ring. Styles works on Orton leg as he chop blocks him and goes to work with submission holds. Orton manages to fight back and hold AJ at bay. AJ directs most of his offence to the left leg. Randy comes back with a series of clotheslines and Powerslams AJ down before gaining a near fall. AJ gains a near fall as he fights back from Randy wearing him down. Styles attempts the Styles Clash, but Orton fights out and sends AJ onto the apron before bringing him back in with his middle rope DDT but AJ counters. He locks Orton in the Calf Crusher but Randy forces a rope break. Orton sends AJ back out onto the apron and this time he connects with his middle rope DDT. Orton attempts the RKO but its countered by the Pele Kick. AJ fakes an attempt at the Phenomenal Forearm which leads Randy to try counter with an RKO attempt only to drop himself to the mat. AJ goes for the Springboard 450 Splash, Randy rolls out of the way he sends Styles up in the air and then connects with an RKO. Randy Orton wins via Pinfall.

Not the greatest episode of Smackdown in all honesty, most of it was pointless and irrelevant. The best moment had to be the Main Event however, I feel like both AJ and Orton should be in the Main Event at Wrestlemania. AJ did earn the right as did Randy. With all things being considered I would have to say Smackdown dropped the bar on this one, 6/10.
