We take a look back at the four ties from this weekend’s FA Cup 1/4 Finals
Middlesborough vs Manchester City
Pep Guardiola’s men wasted no time in taking the game to the home side. It took just 3 minutes before David Silva scored City’s opener to make it 1-0. Yaya Toure seeked out Pablo Zabaleta who fired in a first time cross for David Silva to find the back of the net from 6 yards out. Boro missed a chance to draw level after Pablo Zabaleta cleared Rudy Gestede’s effort off the line after Bravo dropped the save. City had plenty of chances to put this game to bed but failed to make Karanka’s men pay. City continued to show their attacking prowess as they again couldn’t extend the lead in the second half. They eventually found a way through in the 67th minute as Sergio Aguero connects with a Leroy Sane cross to make it 2-0.
Manchester City are through to their first FA Cup Semi Final since 2013 when they surprisingly lost in the Final to Wigan.
Arsenal vs Lincoln City
Arsenal put an abrupt halt to the dream run of Lincoln City in the FA Cup. The gulf in class couldn’t have been more evident as The Gunners won by a comfortable 5-0 scoreline. Lincoln did well in the first half as they saw out almost the entire half without conceding a goal. Theo Walcott put an end to the fairytale as he scored a low drive into the corner to make it 1-0. Shortly, after the break Arsenal scored again this time Olivier Giroud finished from 12 yards out to make it 2-0. Arsenal’s third came as a result of an unfortunate own goal from Waterfall, as he tried to clear a Kieran Gibbs cross but deflected it into his own net to make it 3-0. Alexis Sanchez got his name on the scoresheet after being slated by Arsenal fans for apparently laughing during the Bayern Munich game. The Chilean forward made it 4-0 in the 72nd minute as he curls in a 25 yard shot. Aaron Ramsey added The Gunners‘ fifth and final goal of the evening as a Sanchez cross leaves him to simply tap in on an open goal to make it 5-0.
Arsenal advance to the FA Cup Semi Final since they won the trophy back to back in 2014 and 2015.
Tottenham vs Milwall
Pochettino’s Spurs made light work of the League One side, as they brushed them aside 6-0. It was a relatively easy game for Tottenham. Although they didn’t have the best of starts as star striker Harry Kane had to be substituted off in 10th minute due to injury. However, this didn’t stop Spurs as Kane’s replacement Eriksen was the man who opened the scoring on the 31st minute as he fired in a right footed effort it to make it 1-0. Spurs doubled their lead shortly before the break as Son Heung-Min scored the first of his three goals when he managed to find the top left corner of the goal to make it 2-0. Son added to his first goal to make it 3-0 in the 54th minute as he finds he bottom right hand corner. Dele Alli also joined in the scoring having assisted one of the goals already. Alli finished from close range to make it 4-0 in the 72nd minute. Summer signing Vincent Janssen piled more misery onto Millwall as he scores Spurs fifth of the afternoon with a left footed drive making it 5-0. Son completed the rout in added time as he completed his hat trick as he connected with a Christian Eriksen cross to make it 6-0.
Tottenham advance to the FA Cup Semi Finals. Tottenham will be hoping to that their poor Wembley record won’t effect the FA Cup having been knocked out of the UEFA Champions League & Europa League already there this season. It is also well worth noting that Spurs haven’t won in 6 FA Cup Semi Finals. Everything seems to be against Tottenham making it to the Final.
Chelsea vs Manchester United
Jose Mourinho returns back to Stamford Bridge for the second time this season, as United boss. United’s unbeaten run began after their Premier League defeat to Chelsea. Antonio Conte’s men seek to ensure a victory once again this time a place at Wembley at stake. United were reduced to 10 men after Ander Herrera was sent off for a second offence. His first came in the 21st minute for a foul on Eden Hazard. Herrera was at it once again, in the 35th minute as he tripped Hazard and was sent off. The two teams went into the break 0-0. Just after the break, Chelsea made the man advantage count as they went 1-0. In the 51st minute, N’Golo Kante struck fiercly from almost 25 yards out and beat David De Gea. The two teams went back and forth, both having good opportunities to score. Conte’s men saw out the victory and advance to the FA Cup Semi Finals.
It’s no surprise that Chelsea won this tie, they absolutely dominated on the night in what was a thrilling game and they’ve been the best side in England all season. It looks like they will stroll to the Premier League title with a sizeable points gap over Tottenham, could they also add the FA Cup to the trophy cabinet? Can Antonio Conte win the double in his first season?
